Did You Ever

Did You Ever

Did you ever hear the old man talk,
And see his ways, even his walk?
Well I left it all up to you,
To see in him the things you should do.
But all you have are empty thoughts,
Forever fearing what was taught.
You never knew your life would pass,
As fast as trees past the car glass.

Did you ever hear the flowers sing,
And walk through their own piece ring?
Well I left it all up to you,
To see in them the things you should do.
Like love the sun, as much as the rain,
And take it all inside, even the pain.
But you never thought they had a voice,
So you closed your ears, your own choice.

Did you ever hear the baby cry,
And laugh with joy at every lie?
Well I left it all up to you,
To see in a child what should have been you.
To live the dreams you never tasted,
To not live your life so hasted.
I tried to scream your name out to you,
But you’ve never heard something so true.

Did you ever hear the river run free,
Through the mountains, the valleys, the trees?
Well I left it all up to you,
To hear from this all you need to do,
But you never heard the old man talk,
And you never heard the flower sing or walk,
And you never heard the baby cry,
Or the river run free through the sky.
